FAQ
Let's start collecting useful questions and answers for everyone here.
Where can I buy the new, updated guide?
Email us at info@camminodeibriganti.it and we will tell you how.
I would like to know more about your path.
If you read carefully, you will already find plenty on the site. Then we recommend you watch Annalisa Galloni's interview with Luca Gianotti on YouTube (40 min) or listen to Radio Orte's interview with Luca Gianotti (about 1 hour): in both there is everything you need to know about the Cammino dei Briganti.
A friend and I will be doing the walk in two months. I wanted to ask about the weather.
The weather is becoming less and less predictable, so there is no point in asking us about it. But we have created a page with some weather webcams, so you can see in real time what the weather is like at this very moment.
We would like to know if it is possible to walk the route in five stages, since we do not have many days available, and if so we would like to know which stages to join.
I advise you to study your stages yourself, there are no rules, only individual choices. Take the guidebook, study the possible stage places, check availability and build your own route.
Do you encounter flocks and guard dogs on the way? I ask this because I would like to walk the path with my dog, which I will always carry on a leash, but I would like to avoid disturbing flocks and dogs.
It is rare but it is possible. To find out how to deal with dogs watching the flocks, read and listen to the in-depth information on the page Tips and essentials.
From Cartore to Rosciolo, which route is best to take?
There are two possibilities, as can be seen from the map and the description: the shorter route goes directly to Rosciolo, the longer route involves climbing up to Duchessa, descending through the Val di Teve and arriving at Bocca di Teve; from there, continue on to Rosciolo. This route is obviously much longer (a day's walk is to be expected), and requires surefootedness, high mountain experience and a sense of direction in the sections above Lago della Duchessa (Malo Passo).
I can no longer find the Meridiani Cammini special dedicated to the Cammino dei Briganti, which also has the map attached, at newsstands. What can I do?
It is an up-to-date and in-depth tool on the path itself. Copies can be requested as back issues by calling 02 92858500 or writing to uf.vendite@edidomus.it. It is also back on newsstands in June 2021, given the success of its first appearance. But only in the central and southern regions.
I have problems with public transport to get to Sante Marie. What do you recommend?
We recommend arriving by train in Tagliacozzo, and if you cannot find a bus to Sante Marie take a taxi (see the page with the names of those offering this service), it is just over five minutes.
Is there a luggage transport service?
Yes, there is, and the same people also transport people where necessary. Ask the people closest to where you need to go or where you are leaving from (you or your backpacks). For now, there are only a few people available in the countries to do this service, hopefully they will increase. Here are the details.
What time does the municipality of Sante Marie open to take the safe-conduct?
In the summer of 2022, the lifeboat office is open from 8.30 a.m. to 8 p.m., including Saturdays and Sundays. in the event of a short absence, there is a mobile phone at the door for availability.
Can you mail me the safe-conduct so I can save going through the office?
Sorry, but this is not possible. The safe-conduct must be taken at departure to register who is actually leaving and to know who is on the road in that specific week.
Is the route feasible by MTB?
The route is almost all practicable by mountain bike, except for a few very small sections where you have to get out of the saddle. Clearly, you need to have a little leg and handle. The route is all perfectly marked. With the mountain bike, the route has minimal variations. However, feasible and beautiful. MTB tracks can be found on the website.
Is it possible to sleep in a tent?
The Walk is also suitable for people sleeping in tents. For reasons of hygiene, we have created managed tent spaces with toilets. We had to put a maximum number to avoid traffic jams. It is strongly recommended that you sleep in those spaces. If from time to time during the walk you happen to sleep in a tent outside the designated places, choose suitable places (do not pitch your tent in villages, but at least 500 metres from houses).
Bring the obligatory shovel and bury your needs. Do not leave handkerchiefs along the way. For campsites with fountains, showers and toilets, the list is on the Hospitality page of the site. For rules to follow, see the Tips and essential information page. In the Duchessa Reserve there are specific rules to respect and forms to fill out.
I have read that in the mountains around Lake Duchessa there is a possibility of finding Marsican bears and wolves. Can this be a serious concern or do I go quietly?
Go easy! There are no bears, and wolves do not attack humans. At most, if you are lucky, you may hear their howling or see them from afar, in which case you are lucky to be able to enjoy such a rare event.
Are there any exposed or technically difficult passages?
No, nothing particularly technical, there are no paths classified as EE, i.e. for experienced hikers. On the ascent to the Duchessa through the Val di Fua there is a small passage on rock that has a chain, but it is more of a precaution for rain or snow.
I wanted to ask if doing only a few stages of the walk there are connections to take the car back. In other words, starting from Sante Marie and doing a couple of stages, can I find buses to take me back to Sante Marie?
There are no buses because there are no bus connections between two different regions. But you can use the private service of the luggage transport people by contacting them in the list on the website.
I would like to do the walk at the end of August. I would like to know the average temperatures at that time, if it is feasible or if it is too hot.
The Cammino dei Briganti can be walked all year round; there is never a scorching heat, since you never descend below 700 metres in altitude. If you happen to be on a very hot week (it can be in August, but it is easier in June or July) you just need to organise yourself by avoiding stretches without shade during the hottest hours, then taking a nice lunch break. But in general it is an often shady path.
I am afraid of shepherd dogs, the Abruzzese, what should I do?
Abruzzi dogs are trained to do their job, which is to prevent a possible danger from approaching the herd, so you have to know how to behave. We recommend you watch this webinar by zooanthropologist Pirani, an expert in the field.
Are there dangerous snakes?
No. If you meet a snake, respect it, as you would any other living creature. There is only one very rare viper, it is called the Orsini viper, it lives in the upper parts of the Velino, it is one of the most protected animals in the area, it is small and shy, it does not bite unless you put your finger in its mouth, and its venom is not so dangerous.
Is it feasible to do the Duchessa Lake stage in one day from Torano and return to sleep in Torano in the evening? I can't find beds in Cartore on the dates I need them.
The Torano hostel does the service of approaching walkers to make the stage possible.
I wanted to ask if the route is feasible in three days.
As we explain repeatedly on the site, we think it should be done in six to seven days. Then an ultra runner has done the 100 km walk in one day, so anything is possible. But from our experience those who do it in 3 or 4 days get stressed, arrive late in the evening, have not had time to have a chat with a shepherd or an elderly person, have not deepened the themes of the walk, are tired instead of regenerated, in short, have had a different experience from the one we propose, more fitness than deep knowledge. Doing it in five days is possible, but it is a middle way, you see.
Is it necessary to book each individual facility of the various stages, or is it possible to contact only one possible organising centre?
Each facility directly, whose contact details and updated list are here on the website.
Could you help us understand whether it is suitable for a 9-year-old child?
The walk is also suitable for children, but of course children must love walking.
I wanted to know if I will find the Rifugio Panei open.
The so-called Rifugio Panei is actually a bivouac; since summer 2025, it has unfortunately been closed, by choice of the Sant'Anatolia ASBUC.
I'm trying to book one of the facilities in the network, but they won't answer me. Is there any other way to contact them?
The contact details are those, don't call at meal times (all the more so if the establishment is also a restaurant) and if they don't answer write them an e-mail. In general, don't expect establishments to ALWAYS answer immediately, but they will definitely answer.
For the safe-conduct if I leave soon, is it possible to collect it elsewhere in Sante Marie?
Not so far.
I would like to do the walk in a tent. The only problem I have is with wolves and bears (and maybe dogs), is it safe? Anyway, I'll be as close to the villages, so generally there shouldn't be a problem, but being the Marsica... you never know!
There are no Marsican bears in this part of the territory, and the wolves are high up in the mountains, in the tent they do not enter, and it would be lucky for you to see them, it is always an exciting encounter, but very rare.
I would like to know what it is like to walk this camino for a single girl. I should mention that I have walked Santiago, the Via Francigena and the Camino de San Jacopo alone, but I got the idea that this camino is wilder. Are there girls who walk it alone?
Yes, there have been several girls who have walked it solo without any problems in the past.
Is the site up-to-date?
Yes, daily. You can also consult FB and Instagram.
Can you do the walk on horseback?
Nothing prevents this. But the accommodation facilities are not equipped, neither with fences or stables nor with hay for the horses. So you have to find other solutions to hospitality, in tents in the forest.
Where can I leave my car in Sante Marie for 6 days?
For those arriving by car in Sante Marie, you can ask the Salvacondotti office for advice on where you can leave it, they will indicate an unattended car park.
We would like to do the Cammino dei Briganti in August by camper van, but we would obviously need to know if there are camper van areas along the route where we can stop, refuel with water, dump the waste water, etc.
There are no camper van areas along the way.
