Accomodation

Accommodation and camping

The accommodation options are listed in chronological order – that is, in the order in which you’ll come across them along the route. So, if a place is fully booked or closed, please contact the one immediately before or after it on the list (and so on).

All accommodation should be booked well in advance. These are almost always small, family-run establishments. Please do not put them in a difficult position with last-minute requests! Not least because you risk being unable to complete the Camino, or having to make detours that would mean missing out on some truly beautiful sections. The accommodation providers in the network have committed to adhering to maximum prices; here is the table from our guidelines:

  • A. Hotels (hotels, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, farm stays) €30–50 per person including breakfast
  • B. Guest accommodation (rooms to let, private rooms, hostels) €22–27 per person including breakfast
  • C. Basic accommodation (tents, large dormitories with floor sleeping spaces) €10 per person, excluding breakfast

Prices vary depending on the category: lower rates in private homes and hostels, and average market rates for bed & breakfasts and farm stays.

Only accommodation providers displaying this sign are part of the pilgrimage route network; we can guarantee the quality and fair prices of these establishments.

The organisations that have joined and been selected to form part of the trail network are those that have signed a commitment to offer good value for money to walkers, and, above all, these are the people who are currently keeping the route alive through their work maintaining the path, whilst also covering the costs of this themselves. There are, of course, other accommodation providers springing up across the region, even if they are not directly involved in this network. It is not difficult to find them online.

Prices vary depending on the category: lower rates in private homes and hostels, and average market rates for bed and breakfasts and farm stays.

In a tent

The Way welcomes those who sleep in tents. However, you must be considerate and follow the rules. If too many people fail to do so, we will be forced to ban this wonderful opportunity.

Rules for those sleeping in tents

As the number of people camping is particularly high in summer, we ask that, wherever possible, you camp in designated areas, farm campsites or similar facilities, which, for a small fee, provide toilet facilities and ensure good hygiene standards. In exceptional cases, it is possible to camp outside designated areas, provided you choose suitable spots (do not pitch tents in villages, but at least 500 metres from houses). It is compulsory not to leave any rubbish behind, such as tissues, and always to bury your waste. You must carry a small, lightweight spade with you to bury your waste (see this example). On departure, you will be asked to show it in order to receive your pass. No spade, no pass.

You must also set off with your own bowl, cutlery and glass, as – out of respect for the environment and in accordance with European laws – farm campsites will no longer be able to serve you beer in disposable plastic cups, nor barbecued meat on disposable plates and cutlery. In this way, the walk aims to stay ahead of the law, which will ban their use from 2021. Let’s respect the environment!
Within the Duchessa Nature Reserve, there are specific rules (see below).
There are still very few designated facilities for campers, with drinking fountains, showers and toilets (and accommodation providers do not have dedicated areas).

Following the influx of visitors during the mid-August bank holiday in 2020, we’ve decided to introduce a maximum number of tent campers as well. This depends on the number of toilets and showers available. So please always book in advance, even if you’re camping in a tent, because once that limit is reached, you’ll be told ‘NO’ – there simply isn’t any space left. We’re doing this for your sake; we’ve received complaints. Obviously, 30 people with just one toilet is unmanageable, so for now the numbers need to be reduced to ensure everyone’s comfort. Therefore, a maximum of 12 people if there’s one toilet, and a maximum of 25 people if there are two toilets.

Special rates for scout groups

For groups from Scout associations and similar organisations, comprising minors, we have a special arrangement. For groups of 14 or more people, the cost of pitching a tent in the tent areas will be 7 euros per person instead of 10, to compensate for the inconvenience caused by the limited number of toilets relative to the number of people.

Here is the breakdown of tent pitches:

Santo Stefano

Agriturismo La Grande Quercia
You can pitch a tent there for 8 euros per person. Mobile: 333 7295466, landline: 0863 677412. Email: agri.lagrandequercia@gmail.com

Le Macerine Farm tent area
A tent site just past Santo Stefano, a meadow reached from the spring at the end of the village via a short 250-metre detour to the left. Run by two young lads, it’s still very basic at the moment; they have a small toilet, a solar-heated outdoor shower, a fountain and plenty of space on the meadow and in the copse (you’ll need to look for flat spots). Construction work is currently underway, so expect things to be a work in progress. The cost is €7 per person to pitch a tent. A maximum of 12 people are accepted per day. They also serve breakfast (€5) and dinner (€15), using local produce and produce from their own farm (though they prepare the meals at home and then bring them over by car). Contact: Angela (339 6321212), email fattoriadidattica273@gmail.com.

Nesce

The Di Felice tourist accommodation has a small area for 3 tents. Ask Luca; he’ll show you where to pitch your tents and will come to let you in: 340 8030634. Maximum 6 people. They can also provide dinner or breakfast on request.

Corvaro

Al Fontanile: tent area on the premises, with showers, toilets and meals available. Contact: Rossana, tel. 370 1567835.

Cartore

Sosta del Brigante: Fabio, who is based at the former botanical garden, provides tent pitches with basic facilities. Cost: 10 euros per night. He also has a couple of tents of his own which he lends to those who can’t find a place elsewhere and don’t have a tent. As there are no shops in Cartore, you won’t find anything to eat here, neither for a packed lunch nor for dinner. If you need anything, Fabio can do your shopping the day before, but you must let him know on the morning of the day before your arrival (not before or after). A maximum of 25 people are accepted per day (2 toilets and 2 showers). Fabio: 371 6570126 (347 3248571) and lasostadelbrigante@gmail.com.

In the Duchessa Nature Reserve, there are only two places authorised by the Reserve: at Cartore in the car park area, with no facilities but a spring nearby; and the Panei Refuge at Caparnie – sleeping by the lake is strictly forbidden!; to stay overnight at either location, you need an official permit from the Reserve, which must be requested in advance by filling in the appropriate form. And be prepared to wait, as they don’t reply quickly! In any case, the date the form is sent counts; even if you don’t receive a reply, you’re covered and can stay overnight.

Magliano de’ Marsi

La Terra di Gaia Farm Campsite is right on the route, 2 km before you reach Magliano. A beautiful villa with views of Mount Velino, in a secluded spot amongst the trees. Gaia will welcome you here. The site offers the option of staying in rooms or camping with a tent. There are two bathrooms with showers in the tent area.
Tent area: pitch fee €15.00 per person, breakfast included.
Contact details: Gaia, mobile 3356212068, landline 0863455497, email info@laterradigaia.it

Il Timo Farmhouse/Restaurant/Campsite: tent area with facilities and a restaurant (there are also self-catering flats, but a minimum stay of two nights applies). For tent accommodation: €8 per person, all-inclusive (drinking water, shaded pitch, use of toilets and hot showers). A maximum of 12 people accepted per day. There’s also a 15% discount on lunch or dinner. And if you’d like, you can arrange a pick-up (including luggage) to and from Avezzano or Tagliacozzo at no extra cost. Here are the details of this special offer: https://iltimo.it/Cammino-dei-Briganti/ Tel. 393 8760530, info@iltimo.it, Facebook.
